MIRPURKHAS, July 27: A complete strike was observed in Jhuddo on Friday on a protest call given by a farmers’ organisation against an acute shortage of water at the tail-end reaches of Jamrao Canal.

Hundreds of farmers demonstrated on the Jhuddo-Mirpurkhas road and blocked it with barriers which led to suspension of traffic for some time. They were carrying banners and placards and raising slogans against irrigation officials.

General secretary of the Sindh Hari Tehrik Ayaz Khoso told reporters that persisting water shortage had rendered 15,000 acres of land barren.

He accused the irrigation authorities of releasing water into direct outlets and newly-dug minor canals at the cost of channels at the tail- end of Jamrao Canal.

He said that there had been no water in Buggi minor canal and Silore distributary for nine months.

He said that elected representatives were paying no heed to their complaints.
