I would like to see more comments from the parties effected by the subject highlighed in the article, in this case indians muslims, christians. Instead these comments places becomes the battle ground for pakistanis and indians. Either the minorities in india are extremly satisfied with their econmic and social standings or so deprived / un-educated that they don't have a courage / means or education to write the actual situation in these forums.

The original article, by the very same authors, is titled "As adoption demands grow, Indian families look beyond castes and religion" and has been published in Washington post in May sometime. Please google and read the article. Its about 75% same, word by word, but presents a different view and conclusion.

To cater to Dawns readership in Pakistan, they then mixed some really vitriolic and totally misleading views by Hashmi, into the very same article, and then called it "In India, non-Hindu parents face adoption prejudice". To make it look like the Indian constitution is discriminating against minorities or something like that. I guess u get more readers for this kind of stuff. Though I must admit that our media is not really any better.

Either the authors have no clue about what they have written(about Indian constitution and personal laws etc) and have been taken for a ride, or else its a deliberate attempt to sell articles.

Although I wont claim that everything is hunky dory here in India, we can not seriously be accused of creating laws for the permitting systematic discrimination against minorities. The problem in this case is that we have no uniform civil code. Muslims are governed by their own personal laws, which most in the rest of the rest of the world ,as well as libera l mustims in India themselves consider a little outdated. India has been permitting its citizens, rightly or wrongly ,to be goverbed ,by their own personal laws. Even liberal muslims who do not want to be governed by such laws have no escape. This rule does more injustice to liberal muslim than to members of other religions who are unaffected by it. Even though the claim in the article that non Hindus are discriminated against is technically correct the alternative, letting some babies born free , to be governed by a set of laws which most developed democracies might consider outdated, is more unfair. I look forward to the day when the vast majority of the non radical muslims in India gains enough courage to demand a uniform civil code in India so that religion does not come in the way of people looking for adopting babies. I am not comparing our situation with the laws in Pakistan, which are more discriminatory, for the simple reason that we should not be making Pakistan our benchmark. We should not justifying any unjust act on our party just because the same or worse is permitted in Pakistan. Pakistan by constitution itself treats muslims preferentially and makes no secret of it. We, on the other hand are a secular country and therefore strive to ensure that , being in a minority community should in no way be a hindrance to enjoying the rights enjoyed by the members of the majority community
