LONDON, July 30: British women’s field hockey captain Kate Walsh has undergone surgery for a broken jaw and could miss the remainder of the London Olympics.

Walsh was accidentally hit by a stick on the side of the face as she went in for a tackle near the end of Britain’s 4-0 win over Japan in a preliminary match on Sunday night.

She went to hospital and had an operation on Monday, with a plate inserted to “stabilise the fracture,” the team said.

While the injury should not prevent Walsh from playing, the British Olympic Association says, “her continued participation is dependent on her recovery from the surgery and this will be assessed on an ongoing basis over the coming days.”—AP
