Wheelie leaves two dead

TAXILA, July 30: Two young men lost their lives and another got critically injured when their motorcycle rammed into a dumper on G.T. Road near Taxila toll plaza on Sunday evening.

Police sources said that Adnan Safdar along with his friends Aziz Altaf and Raja Saqib came from Rawalpindi on his motorcycle (RIP- 677) to Khanpur Dam on Sunday for bathing.

While returning home, they started performing stunts on their bike. While doing a wheelie, they suddenly rammed into a dumper (RIN- 9593) when due to speeding they lost control over the bike.

They were rushed to a local hospital where Adnan and Aziz were pronounced dead while Raja’s condition was stated to be critical.  Police arrested the driver of the dumper, Mehmood Khan, and started investigation. — Correspondent

Police launch crackdown

TAXILA, July 30: In a crackdown against antisocial elements Taxila police claimed to have arrested 65 proclaimed offenders (PO) wanted in different crimes including the heinous ones like murders, attempted murders and robberies.

Police sources said that a team led by Inspector Sardar Shakeel Ahmed launched a massive crackdown against the antisocial elements and arrested the POs, while 48 cases were registered for recovery of illegal arms and ammunition from different alleged outlaws.

Similarly 62 cases were registered after the recovery of narcotics and drugs from different alleged drugs smugglers. Sources said that police also busted an alleged gang involved in abduction for ransom cases and arrested its two members identified as M.S. and A.H. — Correspondent

Five ‘POs’ arrested

ISLAMABAD, July 30: The capital police on Monday claimed to have arrested five proclaimed offenders (POs) and eight suspects during a crackdown.

According to details, Inspector General of Police Islamabad Bani Amin Khan assigned task to all sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) to launch crackdown against POs and conduct search operations in their respective areas.

During the last 24 hours, Sihala and Shahzad Town police apprehended five POs who were wanted to police in various criminal activities.

The Bara Kahu police also conducted search operation in its area and claimed to arrest seven suspects while Aabpara police also nabbed a suspect.

Meanwhile, Golra police said it arrested three alleged robbers. Ramna police also nabbed three alleged thieves and claimed to have recovered stolen items worth thousands of rupees from them. — Staff Reporter

Scholarships date extended

ISLAMABAD, July 30: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has extended the last date for receipt of applications, for Indigenous PhD fellowships for 5000 scholars — Phase-II till August 7, 2012.

The main purpose of the extension of the date is to facilitate the candidates, especially from far-flung areas of the country.

The scholarship will be awarded for the academic year 2012-13, in all areas of studies/disciplines on quota basis, as per Federal Government Quota policy approved by Government of Pakistan.

The HEC has asked applicants, who have submitted online forms, under the scholarship scheme, to fill the missing mandatory information within the extended date, so that their applications could be considered, before the merit lists, for the award of scholarship were drawn. — A Reporter

Out of order streetlights

RAWALPINDI, July 30: The streetlights installed in Rawal Town area had become dysfunctional plunging several union councils into darkness and creating inconvenience for the residents.

The residents of union council no. 16,33,34,and 35 complained that the out of order streetlights posed problems for them as they not only had to go out for prayers in the mosques during Ramzan in complete darkness but the incidents of street crimes had also increased in the areas.

Mahmood Akbar, a resident of Karimpura, said that they had lodged several complaints with the town municipal administration (TMA) but to no avail.

Imtiaz Ahmed, another resident of the Pir Choa area complained that the streetlights had gone out of order increasing the number of robbery and road accidents.

The residents demanded of the TMA to repair    the faulty streetlights on priority basis.

When contacted, the TMA officials said the staff would carry out maintenance work soon. They added that focal persons of the respective areas should note down the complaints. They further said that the proper maintenance of the out of order streetlights would be done on regular basis. — APP

Construction work on projects

RAWALPINDI, July 30: Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Imdadullah Bosal on Monday said that construction work on mega projects of Rawalpindi city including 6th Road flyover, Pirwadhai Road flyover and underpass projects would be started soon.

The Commissioner chairing a meeting held here issued special instructions to the authorities concerned that the shifting of utility services from the proposed sites should be completed within shortest possible time.

The 6th Road flyover and Pirwadhai Road flyover projects would help improve the traffic flow on Benazir Bhutto Road and Peshawar Road, he said.

He further said both the projects would help facilitate the citizens and heavy traffic load on these intersections could be controlled in a better way. — APP
