KARACHI, July 30: A teenage boy was killed in firing by a policeman, posted at the Chief Minister’s House, near Qasba Mor in Orangi Town on Monday.

Following the incident, the victim’s family and sympathisers staged a protest in the area and pelted passing vehicles with stones.

Police said the incident took place at Mohammad Pur Chowk, within the remit of the Pirabad police station, where sub-inspector Mohammad Akhlaq was present at a cellphone top-up shop.

Quoting Sub-Inspector Akhlaq, SSP-West Amir Farooqui said that when the SI came out of the shop, a group of men surrounded him and tried to snatch his pistol.

He fired a warning shot, and “in haste” fired another shot which hit a young boy, the SSP said.

He, however, ruled out the possibility of snatching in the area, saying that it was illogical.

The area SHO tried to protect the officer saying that SI Akhlaq was trying to resist a snatching attempt when he opened fire hitting the boy.

The victim’s brother, Sajjad Khan, told a private TV channel that the policeman had fired a straight shot at his brother.

The wounded Saddam Khan, 16, later died in hospital.

Enraged over the killing, area people threw rocks at the Mohammad Pur police post and set fire to tyres, disrupting traffic on the area roads.

The tension and law and order situation lasted till night, when extra police enforcement was sent to control the situation.

Police said Sub-Inspector Akhlaq was posted in the CM House special team.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.
