ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Wednesday unanimously adopted a motion to constitute a special committee to help remove various anomalies in the electoral rolls announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Senator Sughra Imam, who moved the motion, drew the attention of the chair that several anomalies still exist in the recently announced electoral rolls.

She said there must be a mechanism to delete the names of the deceased persons from the database of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).

Nadra has prepared the electoral rolls on the basis of its prevalent databank. According to the reports the names of the deceased CNIC holders have not yet been deleted from the database. Hence their names have also been included in the voters’ lists.

There must be a mechanism that the heirs of a deceased should surrender the Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) so that his or her name could be deleted from the database, said Imam.

But, according to the Senator, there is no such mechanism and the names of the deceased have been included in the lists, which must be deleted immediately.

Imam urged that a committee be constituted to take up the issue with the officials of the election commission and Nadra to ensure transparent elections in future.

Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari, after taking the consent of the House, agreed to notify the committee which would be mandated to talk to ECP and Nadra to remove such errors in the voter lists.

The committee would comprise of the leader of the house, leader of the opposition and the mover, Senator Sughra Imam.
