Three killed in Karak

KARAK, Aug 2: Three persons were killed and two others sustained injuries in three separate incidents here on Thursday.

Police said that in the first incident a young boy identified as Romal Farhat was hit by a motorcyclist near Mithakhel high school. He was rushed to Karak DHQ hospital from where he was referred to Peshawar. But, he died on the way.

In another incident, that two motorcycle riders fell into a ravine on Shakardara road. A man identified as Mushtaq died on the spot while his friend Mujtaba sustained serious injuries and he was shifted to a nearby hospital.

In yet another accident, two motorcyclists collided head-on on Karak-Palso Sar road. One of them identified as Faraz Khan was killed while the other one was shifted to a nearby health centre with serious injuries. —Correspondent

Timber smuggling

MANSEHRA, Aug 2: The people of Oghi have demanded of the government to launch a crackdown against timber smugglers who, what they say, are involved in large scale cutting of trees in Shergar range.

“We have taken up the issue of the illegal cutting of trees in Shungli Bandi and other forests in Shergar range but to no avail. If the government wants to protect the green treasure of the province, it should launch crackdown against the timer smugglers in the area,” said Wazir Mohammad, former union council nazim of Shungli Bandi while speaking at a press conference in Oghi on Thursday.

A group of people led by Wazir Mohammad were of the view that black sheep in forest department were also backing the influential timber smugglers and had given them a free hand. — Correspondent

Compensation distributed

KOHAT, Aug 2: The district coordination officer distributed Rs6.9 million as cash compensation to the heirs among the families of deceased and injured tribesmen here on Thursday.

The district coordination officer, Zakir Hussain Syed, gave cheques to the heirs of 21 people who were killed and 21 injured in terrorist acts in the frontier region of Kohat.

The DCO, who also holds the charge of political agent of the frontier region, speaking on the occasion said that money could not be a substitute but the government was giving compensation to the heirs of the terrorism victims to express its solidarity with them. — Correspondent

Recovery of psychiatrist sought

PESHAWAR, Aug 2: The Pakistan Psychiatric Society has expressed concern over kidnapping of their colleague Prof Ghulam Rasool in Quetta and demanded of the government to take immediate steps for his recovery.

In a statement, issued here on Thursday, Dr Syed Mohammad Sultan and Dr Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the office-bearers of the KP chapter of the PPS, said that kidnapping of the senior psychiatrist had sent a wave of fear among the medical fraternity and his early recovery would end the prevalent unrest among them. They said that the government should ensure security of doctors to enable them to serve the patients at the hospitals. — Bureau Report

Eight butchers arrested

CHARSADDA, Aug 2: The DCO along with food department officials conducted surprise visits to various bazaars and arrested eight botchers on charges of overcharging customers. One of the butchers was also sent to Dera jail under 3 MPO.

The DCO Charsadda, Ajmal Khan, along with DFC Saleem Iqbal, AFC Abdul Hafeez and other staff members conduct surprise visits to Rajar, Utmanzai and Sardheri bazaars and checked rates, quality and weight of food items at various shops.

In Sardheri Bazaar seven butchers identified as Mohammad Bilal, Mujeebullah, Liaquat, Murad Ali, Jameel, Sher, and Mujahid were detained while selling meat at exorbitant rates. Cases were registered against them and one of them Zahoor Alam was sent to Dera jail under 3 MPO. — Correspondent

Man kills wife

KHAR, Aug 2: A man allegedly killed his wife over a domestic dispute in Niag Banda area of Mamond Tehsil of Bajaur Agency on Wednesday night.

Official sources said that the accused, Khan Awada, fired at his wife Sadiqia Bibi with Kalashnikov for unknown reasons, wounding her critically. The accused escaped after the incident. Local people rushed to house and shifted the injured woman to hospital but she died before reaching the healthcare facility. The Bajaur levies have started investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, four people were injured during a clash between two groups in Damadola area of Mamond Tehsil on Thursday. Local people said that the clash erupted over a dispute on water between Malik Yusaf Khan and Malik Gul Hameed groups. — Correspondent

Sports in Fata

PESHAWAR, Aug 2: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar has said that sports play an important role in character building of a nation.

He was presiding over a ceremony in the honour of Fata players for their best performance in Pakistan Champions League Tournament held at Governor’s House Peshawar on Thursday. The governor also distributed certificates and cash prizes among the outstanding players.

The governor said that the tribal people were not only good in sports but also in all fields of life. He added that they should be appreciated for surviving in the worsening law and order situation in Fata. He said the problems the tribesmen were facing were imposed on them and we equally shared their worries in these testing times. — Bureau Report
