MANSEHRA, Aug 14: A man and woman were shot dead in two separate incidents in Mansehra on Tuesday.

Police said Mohammad Shafiq, a mechanic, was shot dead by unidentified people outside main bus terminal early on Tuesday when he was returning home from his workshop.

They said the mechanic suffered multiple bullet injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

The body was later handed over to the mechanic’s family after autopsy at King Abdullah Teaching Hospital.

Police later registered a case and began investigation. However, no arrests could be made by Tuesday night.

Also in the day, Mohammad Javed shot dead his aunt in Kaghan area and fled.

Police booked him for murder and began a hunt for him.

Also in the early hours of the day, a tremor measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale was felt in Mansehra, Battagram, Kohistan, Torghar and Balakot.

However, no damage to public life or property was reported.

The people rushed out of their houses in panic.

According to the Met Office, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 75km northeast of Mansehra.

The Oct 2005 earthquake, which killed more than 75,000 people, had the same epicentre.

Meanwhile, Police Complaint and Public Safety Commission member Gulnaz Shah on Tuesday demanded strict action against the rapists of a minor girl in Mansehra.

“The law-enforcers, who committed the heinous crime, should be publicly punished to check crimes against women,” she told reporters in Mansehra.

Ms Gulnaz said she expected dispensation of justice to the rape victim as the Peshawar High Court chief justice had taken a suo motu notice of her case.

“We are not against anyone but want justice for the little girl, who was disgraced at two police stations,” she said.

The commission member said judicial probe into the case could help highlight flaws in the existing police system.

She praised the Mansehra District Bar Association for coming to the help of the rape victim.
