LAHORE, Aug 15: A young girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth storey of a hostel building near MAO College after the newspaper she worked with did not pay her four-month salary.

Islampura police said Seemab Afzaal, 20, of Narang Mandi, Sheikhupura, jumped from the building of private women’s hostel around 4:45pm.

Quoting her family, the police said Seemab had been working as a reporter for an Ichhra-based daily for the last four months but was not paid salary.

She went to her office on Wednesday and again demanded salary from the owner, but in vain.

Quoting witnesses, the police said Seemab reached her hostel and later jumped from the sixth storey. She was rushed to Mayo Hospital where she was pronounced dead by doctors.

Her cousin Nuzhat, who is also a reporter in the same daily, told the police that Seemab got dejected due to financial problems as she had to buy clothes and other stuff for her family members ahead of Eid.

The repeated demands by her family made Seemab extremely upset, Nuzhat said, adding the deceased had told her it would be very difficult for her to go home empty-handed to celebrate Eid. Her father Afzaal is a cancer patient.

Sub-Inspector Muhammad Zahoor of Islampura police said both girls were living in a room arranged by their employer in the hostel.

He said the family of the deceased had alleged the newspaper owner employed the girls fraudulently and didn’t give them their salaries.

DIG (operations) Rai Muhammad Tahir told Dawn a case would be registered in the light of the application yet to be filed by the deceased’s family.

SHOT DEAD: A young man was killed after in-laws of his elder brother opened fire following a domestic dispute at a village of Raiwind City on Wednesday.

Police said in-laws of Muhammad Abbas opened fire which injured his brother Farman. Abbas had a quarrel with his wife. The police have taken 11 people into custody along with weapons.

The accused party told the police they had gone to the village for reconciliation, but had an exchange of words with Abbas and Farman, resulting in firing between two sides.

MURDERED: A teacher died after a weapon carried by his nephew went off in his room in the private school on Saad Rafique Road, Lohari Gate, where he worked.

Lohari Gate police said Akbar Ali of Chunian taught at a private school and also resided there along with his nephew Wahab, 16, a class-IX student.

On Wednesday Wahab, who cleared the annual exam, was joking with his uncle holding his (Akbar’s) licensed gun that went off. Akbar died on the spot.

Police dispatched the body for autopsy and took the youth into custody.

COLLAPSE: A man and a woman were injured in two incidents in the city on Wednesday.

Akram, 28, was injured after roof of a house collapsed on Main Boulevard, Johar Town.

In the other incident, Rani, wife of Maqbool, 50, was injured when the wall of her one-marla house on Ghazi Road near Lesco office caved in.

FIRE: A fire broke out in a factory at Atari Darbar, Main Ferozepur Road, following power short-circuit, in which goods and machinery worth Rs1 million were gutted.

Rescue 1122 Fire Service reached the spot and brought the blaze under control after hectic efforts.

INJURED: A young man was injured after a weapon he was cleaning went off at his house near Rana Town Stop, Shahdara, on Wednesday.

Rescue 1122 said Muhammad Kashif, 28, was shifted to Mayo Hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.
