KARACHI: A bomb struck a bus taking Shia Muslims to a protest rally near Karachi’s Safari Park on University Road on Friday, killing one man and wounding 11 others, police said.

The attack came one day after 20 Shias were hauled out of vehicles in the northwest and shot dead by gunmen dressed in military fatigues.

“A low-intensity bomb planted near a bus stand in Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighbourhood exploded and hit a car and a bus,” senior police official Shahid Hayat told AFP.

“The bomb killed a man in the car and injured 11 others, most of whom were bus passengers,” Hayat said.

The bus was carrying around 40 Shias to a rally marking solidarity with the Palestinians and to demonstrate against Thursday’s sectarian killings.

Police said it was unclear if the Shias were targeted in Karachi.

“We can’t say it was aimed at the bus as the bomb mainly hit the car. But we are investigating,” said a police official on the condition of anonymity.

Karachi is Pakistan’s financial capital. Ethnic, sectarian and politically-linked violence has killed at least 1,100 people so far this year in the city, according to Pakistan’s leading human rights organisation.

COMMENTS

  1. They r criminals of the worst kind and deserve no space.they should be hanged no matter who .what the ulemas are doing?why can't they come out openly against these beasts.

  2. these killers should be hanged in public. we are all one. shias and sunnis all are one.

  3. far too behind on the evolution ladder

  4. Shias were taken off from the bus in Gilgit and killed. Taliban proudly claimed responsibility for this. Now bomb exploded to kill more Shias. This is the month of Ramzan and soon it will be EID. How far our society has rotten. Unbelievable and that in the name of Islam. Yes we need to realize the fact that these are the fanatics from among us.

  5. Isnt this ironic that whenever Pakistan and Iran sit on the same table to discuss trade and other stuff, unfortunate incidents like this start happening right away!

  6. I think ppl took this comment the wrong way..fahad meant the killers are not true muslims..

  7. No if they are not muslim then who are they christians or aliens.. Accept it if a muslim does something wrong expect it that he is a muslim. If a christian or hindu would have done it you'll would be fast to say oh he's a christain… Double standards u people play. u'll will never except that it is ur own muslims that are responsible for the crap in pakistan.

  8. This is a spillover of Punjabi chauvinism. Now it is being expressed in religious terms, before this it was provincial terms. It is militants from that one province indulging in this. It is no surprise then that they are also the ones being shot down by the BLA in Baluchistan as they cause trouble all over the country. Wake up now before it is too late.

  9. How exactly do they identify who is a shia and who is not? Do the surnames give anything away?

    • id cards….also, shias have marks on their bodies because of moharram…..so, just take the shirt out, and you will know who is who.

  10. Mighty India was divided and Pakistan was created. Now Pakistan is divided based on something else. There is no end to division because each of us are different. If each of us kill another person for not being the same as us, there will be no human on this planet. Pakistan, please leave the religious madness.

  11. Psychiatrists can be called in to treat an individual's mental disorders or disorientation.

Now, a new professional must be trained from the scratch to treat COLLECTIVE mental disorders or disorientation.

Pakistan sure needs a new professional to treat a society descending into chaos and anarchy.
