KARACHI, Aug 18: At least three people, including a political activist and Moazzin of a mosque, were killed in separate incidents of firing on Saturday night, officials said.

The renewed wave of violence has claimed 14 lives mostly on sectarian grounds since Friday night.

A Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker was gunned down in Orangi Town minutes after he left his home for a nearby market. Police said armed men on a motorbike opened fire at 30-year-old Afzal Manzoor near Mansoor Nagar.

“He was hit by two bullets and died on the spot,” said an official at the Iqbal Market police station. He said the victim was an active worker of the MQM and his political association appeared to be a reason behind the killing.

Ghulam Jilani, 35, Moazzin of Jama Masjid Al-Akhyar in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, was killed inside a sweet shop on the Main University Road. The area police said he had been targeted by four men on two motorcycles.

“As he crossed the road to see a doctor at his clinic, the assailants spotted him and opened fire at him,” said Inspector Safdar Mashwani, the SHO Aziz Bhatti police station.

“However, he remained unhurt and ran for safety and finally entered the sweet shop. The attackers stormed into the shop and fired shots at him. He sustained four bullet wounds and died on the spot,” the SHO said. A worker of the shop, identified as Mohammad Shakil, was injured.

A city warden was killed by suspected bandits in Baldia Town.

Police said four men on two bikes were fleeing after snatching cash and valuables from a shop in Delhi Colony. Shots fired by them hit 25-year-old Saifur Rehman.

“The victim who was in uniform spotted the bandits,” said an official at the Baldia Town police station. “It seems that the bandits seeing a man in uniform fired the shots in panic. He was killed on the spot.”

The official said Saifur Rehman was also on motorbike performing his duty. He was posted in Saddar area.
