ISLAMABAD, Aug 22: Rain in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and adjoining areas on Wednesday not only made the weather pleasant but also helped improve the water level at local reservoirs.

Despite the ongoing El-nino spell, the prediction of heavy rains during Eid days in the upper parts of the country came true.

The rains starting on Monday witnessed heavy downpour by Wednesday morning, with Murree receiving 75mm showers, which increased the water flow at streams and watercourses coming from the hills.

As witnessed from the large gush at Soan and Korang rivers on Tuesday and Wednesday, the water level at Rawal Lake, Simly and the Khanpur dam increased significantly.

At the same time the torrential rains caused damages to houses, roads and other infrastructures in some parts of hilly area in Murree and Kotli Sattian.

Islamabad at Bokra received 55mm rainfall, Golra 19mm, Zero point 12mm, Chaklala 17mm and Shamasabad 8mm by Wednesday noon.

However, no reports of damage to any property or life have been received from Islamabad.

The Met office said that the current system would continue for another 48 hours, which shows that the monsoon was active in the country.

“Scattered rain-thundershower with isolated heavy falls expected over Kashmir, Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala,  Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal divisions,” the met office said.

However, an official of the Pakistan Meteorological Department said: “The spell is limited to around 30-40 per cent area of the country, while hot and humid weather prevails elsewhere in the country.”

The rain in the past three days also dropped the mercury in federal capital to 27 degrees Celsius and in Murree to 20 degrees.
