Police trying to prevent a car from being washed away by huge waves, after its owner parked it on the bank to watch waves brought on by Typhoon Bolaven in Qingdao, in northeast China's Shandong province.

Typhoon Bolaven, the strongest storm to hit South Korea for almost a decade, left a trail of death and damage in southwestern and south-central regions of the Korean peninsula on August 28, and crossed into China early on August 29.

Maritime police on Jeju Island said 17 people had been rescued but searches were on for those still unaccounted for after two boats capsized early Tuesday as Typhoon Bolaven raged on.

That wind strength put Bolaven in the "super typhoon" category. And with a cloud field of 2,000 kilometers, it was 20 times larger than Okinawa's length.

The storm has since weakened somewhat to become a "severe typhoon."
