SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook ramped up efforts Friday to get rid of “Likes” that aren’t from people genuinely interested in giving a virtual thumbs up to pages at the world’s leading social network.

“We have recently increased our automated efforts to remove Likes on pages that may have been gained by means that violate our Facebook terms” of service, the Facebook security team said in a blog post.

“These newly improved automated efforts will remove those Likes gained by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users or purchased bulk Likes.”

Facebook has long given members the ability to endorse pages at the social network by clicking on “Like” icons.

High numbers of Likes can give “fan count” status to pages, particularly those dedicated to brands.

“A Like that doesn’t come from someone truly interested in connecting with a page benefits no one,” Facebook said.

“This improvement will allow pages to produce ever more relevant and interesting content, and brands will see an increase in the true engagement around their content.”

Facebook expected that less than one per cent of the fan count on any given page would be trimmed as a result of the crackdown on “suspicious Likes.”

COMMENTS

  1. no fake clicks, right, does anyone notice the silence of zuckerberg? after he sold his shares the first say and pocketed a billion, and the co-founder has been doing it in installments as well? yet we are flanking the site, wake up people. Personally, the only “like” I support is the one coming from “Borat” !!!

  2. Thank you anyway ,and thank you for your efforts

  3. i don’t use facebook…

  4. They should also introduce a dislike button.

  5. I think that’s a good move, such a move will allow an equal playing field for both established brand fan pages and blooming ones as well.

  6. For the reasons mentioned, I am glad DAWN shelved likes/dislikes feature of reader’s comments.

  7. It’s bad enough that Facebook exists. Trying to control people’s likes and checking on “suspicious likes?” Pathetic.

  8. Maybe if they added a dislike option to these types of pages?…

  9. deceived users???

  10. Thumbs up because I’m a little homebased business with a great big product. I want my likes to be genuine. It may take me longer but I truly want ppl to know about what I sell because it’s missing in the market. So thank you for trying to make even out the playing field.

  11. Hey Facebook, nobody cares

  12. its necessary…….

  13. Yeah, but if you comment, it means having other comments from strangers flood your
email. I’ll stick with ‘like’, thank you.
