Improving Karachi’s law and order

ALL sort of crimes are rampant in Karachi today. It is beyond comprehension as to why no one is trying enough to curb the lawlessness in the city.

The politics of reconciliation has proved to be flawed for the city residents. Over 6,000 people have lost their lives in political and ethnic killings since 2008.

In order to solve the law and order problem, there must be a political will to call spade a spade and deal perpetrators with an iron hand regardless of their political affiliations and repercussions that may rise after arresting such criminals.

Pakistan is no short of upright, honest, competent and dedicated police officers.

The problem lies in interfering and meddling in affairs of the police department for vested interests.

If a free hand with total political backing is given to the police, I am quite positive that the situation can improve considerably.

Use of latest technology can help. For instance, CCTV cameras are a cost – effective method for crime prevention and detection.

The entire city should be monitored 24/7 and the government should generate funds for the commissioning of cameras through public – private partnership.

Civil society should be brought on board to improve the city’s state of affairs.

Effective use of mobile phone locators can help track and hunt down criminals. Since witnesses are reluctant to come forward due to fear, the witness protection programme must ensure providing foolproof security to witnesses.

  1. excellent. once there is a will, thee is a way.

  2. With all due respect to above suggestions, I am for the community policing in Karachi. The present law enforcers are there for a long time and have failed to produce the desired results, say no more as we all know their capabilities and back ground. Time has now come to start a new police force based on young, educated and energetic people from Karachi alone and have them trained from either UK or USA, I am sure the results would be much better than seen so far.

  3. I agree with the suggestion of the use of technology but i think there is no will to minimize crimes in this city by administration. Once the sincere people gets in power the same law enforcement agencies and the same ‘daanda’ technology can bring peace to this city.

  4. I like to add one point re: CCTV cameras plus a helicoptor service to catch the criminals fast. No matter whatever the cost of the helicopter it will help to catch the criminals. The second point is to make check points at all highways and other routes of entering and exiting point to Balochistan and interior Sindh. These are the short term measures. It wont work until we find the solutions of employment of our youth. Crimes has increased since there are no jobs or means to do business for the living.
