GILGIT, Sept 8: The police on Saturday arrested a proclaimed offender allegedly involved in many incidents of sectarian militancy.

A police spokesperson said the special branch of police provided a tip-off regarding the whereabouts of the outlaw, identified as Wajid Ali. After which a joint team of police and CID led by SP Jahangir Shah arrested the militant.

The police spokesperson said Wajid Ali resisted his arrest but police party overpowered him. Police recovered a 30-bore pistol and ten bullets from him on search of his body.

The police have declared the arrest a major breakthrough in curbing sectarian violence in the region.

The inspector general of police announced cash prizes and commendation certificates for the police personnel.

The areas which received rains during the last 24 hours were Ghizer, Diamer, Skardu and Gilgit districts. The metrological department said Gilgit received 24mm of rain. However, heavy rains did not cause any human or property loss.—Correspondent
