PESHAWAR, Sept 8: In the wake of increase in petroleum prices, transporters in Peshawar district have decided to increase transport fare by Rs2 per stop in case of the government’s failure to revise fare list within three days.
Peshawar Urban Transport Union president Khan Zaman Afridi told Dawn on Saturday that whenever the rates of petroleum products were decreased, the regional transport authority revised fare list but this hadn’t been done after the fresh upward revision of petrol, diesel and CNG prices.
He said petroleum prices had increased thrice over some weeks but transporters didn’t increase fare and even RTA didn’t revise fare.
Mr Afridi said it was the duty of the transport department to revise fare list because such issues always caused differences between transporters and the government.
He said the government used to issue separate fare list for CNG vehicles but oil and CNG prices were almost the same.
The union president asked the government to issue a fare list to transporters without differentiating among diesel, petrol and CNG.
“In the past, the government issued CNG fare lists 25 per cent less than that of diesel when CNG was sold at cheaper rates, but, now, price of gas has also been increased and there is no need for separate price list,” he said.
He said currently, transporters charged a commuter between Rs12 to Rs18 for stop-by-stop bus and wagon travel in Peshawar district.
Mr Afridi said the government was expected to raise fare until Monday otherwise transporters would have to park their vehicles outside the office of the relevant officials.
The Regional Transport Authority secretary couldn’t be contacted for version on fare revision despite repeated attempts.
However, an official of RTA said transporters had yet not formally approached the authority for fare increase.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Transport Authority has notified new fare on different routes in the province and written to all RTA secretaries to prepare fare tables of the routes falling in their respective jurisdiction in light of diesel at Rs112.13 per litre on Sept 1.
