Bank deposits rise

IN the week ended August 24, 2012, deposits and other accounts of all scheduled banks increased and stood at Rs6206.892 billion, higher by Rs68.899 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs6137.993 billion.

Compared with last year’s corresponding figure of Rs5378.793 billion, the current week’s figure is larger by Rs828.099 billion. During the current week, commercial banks deposits showed a rise of Rs68.865 billion over the week to Rs6192.680 billion, against preceding week’s Rs6123.815 billion. Specialised banks deposits stood at Rs14.212 billion, against previous week’s Rs14.177 billion.

According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended August 24, 2012, borrowings by all scheduled banks declined in the week. It fell to Rs794.243 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs890.245 billion, or by Rs96.002 billion.

Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs654.190 billion, current week’s figure is higher by Rs140.053 billion. Commercial banks borrowings decreased to Rs718.015 billion against previous week’s Rs813.908 billion, or by Rs95.893 billion. Borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs76.228 billion, against preceding weeks Rs76.337 billion.

Other liabilities of all scheduled banks stood at Rs310.505 billion, against preceding week’s Rs319.151 billion, showing a fall of Rs8.646 billion. Compared with last year’s corresponding figure of Rs284.556 billion, the current week’s figure is higher by Rs25.949 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs3702.631 billion in the week under review, a decline of Rs12.082 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs3714.713 billion. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs3416.460 billion, current week’s figure is higher by Rs286.171 billion. In the week under review, advances by commercial banks rose to Rs3584.005 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs3596.075 billion, or by Rs12.07 billion. Advances of specialised banks stood at Rs118.626 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks stood at Rs3371.061 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs3441.634 billion, a fall of Rs70.573 billion. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs2659.888 billion, current week’s figure is larger by Rs711.173 billion. In the current week, commercial banks investment stood at Rs3344.932 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs3414.553 billion, a fall of Rs69.621 billion. Specialised banks investment stood at Rs26.129 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks increased by Rs47.837 billion during the week to stand at Rs581.446 billion against earlier week’s Rs533.609 billion. Current week’s figure is higher by Rs99.341 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs482.105 billion.

In the current week, the figure for commercial banks stood at Rs578.740 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs530.968 billion, a rise of Rs47.772 billion, while of specialised banks it stood at Rs2.706 billion, against preceding week’s Rs2.641 billion.

Balances with other banks increased to Rs148.270 billion against Rs146.370 billion in the previous week, or by Rs1.9 billion. It was higher by Rs24.22 billion against Rs124.050 billion in the corresponding week last year. Balances of all commercial banks stood at Rs144.228 billion, an increase of Rs1.011 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs143.217 billion. Balances of specialised banks stood at Rs4.042 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs8338.136 billion, smaller by Rs24.464 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs8362.600 billion. Current week’s figure was higher by Rs1143.856 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs7194.280 billion. In the current week, commercial banks assets stood at Rs8187.406 billion, lower by Rs24.442 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs8211.848 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at Rs150.730 billion.

Net assets of all scheduled banks stood at Rs866.211 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs857.517 billion, showing a rise of Rs8.694 billion. Current week’s figure was higher by Rs71.042 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs795.169 billion. The figure for commercial banks stood at Rs853.766 billion, higher by Rs8.715 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs845.051 billion.

Specialised bank’s net assets stood at Rs12.445 billion, against previous week’s 12.466 billion.
