LAHORE: Pakistan’s Test and One-day International captain Misbah-ul-Haq, one of the most successful skippers in Pakistan cricket history, is facing a difficult situation since he has been forced to surrender his powers of selecting the playing XI to T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez, well informed sources told Dawn.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has delivered a clear message to the team management that T20 captain Hafeez is the right man to consult with because he is the future captain of Pakistan for all the three formats and should be encouraged to take decisions to give him more confidence, the sources disclosed.
The message from the Board has obviously shaken Misbah’s confidence and to save his skin he is simply following the orders given by his employers without showing any real resistance.
Sources further said head coach Dav Whatmore had also been instructed that he should consult with Hafeez in the matters of selection and strategy for every match.
Sources further disclosed that PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has not been happy with Misbah’s captaincy since taking the charge as the Board chief. The sources further said that Misbah is keeping quite over this new situation and is awaiting the results of the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to start in Sri Lanka from Sept 18.
Moreover, the sources said Misbah is also facing problems in controlling his players while Hafeez is enjoying full powers in the dressing room.
They revealed that the playing XI for the last ODI match against Australia in the UAE was primarily selected by Hafeez while national selector Saleem Jaffar and coach Whatmore did not have much input in it.
The sources said though Misbah had led Pakistan to the Asia Cup win over Bangladesh in the final earlier this year, his team was honoured after three long months as the PCB did not want to give any importance to his achievements.
And when the function was finally organised at the Expo Centre after three months, Misbah, Shahid Afridi and some other players got up to leave midway over some snide remarks made by the host, saying that they were being ridiculed as if they had lost the Cup.
It was also surprising that soon after the Asia Cup victory, the PCB took the decision to appoint Hafeez as the new T20 cup captain for the the series against Sri Lanka. Pakistan drew the series in Hafeez’s captaincy.
Though Misbah’s defensive approach as captain has earned criticism from a few quarters, he is still a winning captain and that is what counts in the end. Misbah has led Pakistan in 17 Test matches, winning nine, losing just two and drawing the other six. Misbah’s success rate in both the ODIs and T20s is close to 75 per cent which is fairly good.

What Mr. Ali has commented is 100% correct. Mr. Hafeez is worst captain in the history of Pakistan cricket. He is sole responsible for the worst defeat ever faced by Pakistan. He is not capable even to have a place in national team. Even Taufeeq Umar is better captain than him. As far Misbah is concerned, he is the best captain in last five years. He is better than Inzimzm. The feat Misbah achieved by defeating England ( clean sweep) in test series is self explicit. No Pakistani captain has been able to achieve this honor until now. This has been a normal practice of PCB to dump a best player of the team at his peak. The right man to be dumped right away is Mr. Zaka

i dont understand the logic behind setting hafeez captain as he himself donot deserve to be in the playing 11 he is like shaoib malik they occupy the places for nothing, both the men are not capable enough they should not be given more chances inspite of that razaak and arafat should be given more chance as both of them are match winners. shaoib and hafeez need to cement there places 1st then more responsibility should be given to them

Hafeez is a good choice for the T20 but for the test/odis Misbah is the best choice. He has guided the team to many victories, lets keep faith in him and support him and the team. . . . Pakistan will sure be the best in all three formats.

No doubt Misbah was the captain but test matches against England were won by Saeed Ajmal and Rehman, on batting side youngsters did the job Misbah had no contribution other than captaincy lapses, credit must be given where it is due and keeping politics aside Hafeez will prove to be a better captain, provided selection is done on merits and no back stabbing.

At least honour Misbah for his achievements, Though he is defensive in his approach but what Pakistan has achieved being aggressive. (Disappointment, Match Fixing). If they want Misbah to retire at-least show him a proper way, don't disgrace himself in-front of juniors, Board should create a atmosphere of harmony in the dressing room instead of encouraging favouritism.

Misbah should captian Pakistan test team atleast till the SAF tour early next and then PCB can decide based on team's and his personal performance.
Hafeez is a flat track bully who only scores against weaker bowling sides so not sure how he can cement his place as a captain in test team.

In another interview after the dismal performance against Australia in the third T20 Hafeez stated the following:
"We have a good team with some of our players having played a lot of T20 cricket. Shahid Afridi is one those along with Yasir Arafat, Abdul Razzaq, Imran Nazir. We've got good specialists in the team and have a combination that can do really well in these conditions in the mega event."
He is dreaming if he thinks Pakistan is going to win the T20 world cup with these players. These players have demonstrated that they can only perform against mediocre opponents. Except for Saeed Ajmal and Nasir Jamshed and Hafeez himself to a certain extent, the rest of the team is nothing but mediocre.

Nothing new...After Inzi left we replace a new captain after every 6 months just because of dressing room politics. The irony of the story is Malik, Akmals, Hafeez and other seniors who are known to deliberatley underperform and undermine thier captain make in to team again and again. Next Captain after Hafeez will be Kamran Akmal .. mark my words..!!

This is disgraceful and can only happen in Pakistan. If Hafeez is a true sportsman he would not interfere with the role of his captain and selectors. It would be great to see Pakistan win the t-20 WC but it will be bad for Pakistan cricket.Hafeez would start acting like God and people like Abdul Qadir, Amir Sohail and Zaheer Abbas would worship him, maybe just for a year or so.
Pakistan needs some one like Salahuddin to be the chief selector. He is a no nonsense selector. He will resign at the first attempt by the chairman or any politician in the selection of the team.
I don't understand why people who don't know how to hold a bat become the god father of cricket in Pakistan.

you call 75% of Pakistan's victories, farily good? what's wrong with everyone? it really can not get much better than 75% which i would describe as being SUPERB...it's interesting how everyone's after MISBAH...everyone's forgetting the fact that he was the one who brought stability into the team and hence the fact our performances improved, ever since that ill-fated tour of England in 2010...test matches: 9 wins, 2 losses and 6 draws...come on guys you can't possibly ask for a much better record than that...only one test series defeat in 2 years...before being thrashed by England 4-0 in the odi series in dubai, no one really complained about MISBAH...i mean come on give him a break will u, winning and loosing is part of the game...so stop being such sore loosers and just get on with it..because in my opinion, Misbah has done a brilliant job with whatever resources we have...and mind you none of our resources are anywhere near to being great players..apart from ajmal that is....there is no one who's outstanding...we're decent at best...so i must give misbah the credit in what he's done....

An old English adage that says "Nice guys finish last"! Misbah is too nice a chap - and people can take him for granted. Besides, as a batsman, if his batting form deteriorates, it is harder for him to lead from the front than say Hafeez, who is an allrounder, and has at least twice the opportunities to show his apparent worth. One should never forget that Misbah's true value is as a captain - where he has been able to inspire all the players to perform to their full potential - including Mr. Hafeez. The correct hierarchy should be MIsbah, the coaches, and then Mr. Hafeez.

@ Zaheer 'National Spirit" when Misbah took over Pakistanis cricketers were being caught for Corruption, they were playing for themselves and not for country. For example Government jobs Retiring age in Pakistan is 60 where as world over now changed to 65 or more. In short Age does not mean anything if the persons is mentally and physically fit and doing his job sincerely. I have read world reviews on Misbah...even the Indians hold him in high esteem. I think Misbah is the best choice Pakistan have, Pakistan cricket needs maturity, this is Pakistan dilemma that in all fields of life, we make all our decisions on emotions either it is cricket or any game or politics or religion. We have to use our intellect and logic to prove our arguments, Misbah maturity, calmness even his defensive techniques are part of his side of story but the record shows us that He is a winning captain. People tell about age and fitness always, does any body thought that standing in 8 hours of heat for 5 days its any body's job. & he is doing it quite comfortably. how many times, we seen him not in the field in a test match, resting or we heard that he is sick or his body is not in a good shape. Lets prove our argument on intellectual basis not on emotions. Now the issue of controlling team players, this is world cricket and all Pakistanis knows that we are bunch of individuals, we don't trust even our brothers and sisters , how we expect that controlling will be absolutely perfect. Even our most successful controller of the game was the great Imran Khan, but at that time he never allowed even cricket board to interfere in the game. Why people don't ask that does Zaka Ashraf is a cricketer to make cricket policy, does Ijaz Butt was a cricketer to comment on Cricket. Misbah could be good player but not a fighting captain, he only plays and stays on crease to justify himself. It has been proved in World Cup semi final against India. No aggressive decision and no aggressive batting according to the situation, at the end, Required Run Rate goes out of sight. Same defensive approach seen in test matches.

I fully agree with you. Hafeez is worst captain in last five years. He is neither a good batsman nor a bowler. Every second person in the team is better as captain than him. At the first place he was wrongly appointed as captain. Misbah s far far better than him, Misbhah is even better than Inzimzm. What Misbah did as a
captain to get clean sweep by defeating England in the Test Series no captain has obtained this feat as yet. Moreover, Hafeez can not face media with full confidence. You are right PCB has gone nuts. Pakistan lost the last T20 match because of his wrong decision which happened to be the worst defeat ever faced by Pakistan, shame, shame.

What PCB is about to announce a prize for Ajmal is actually deserved by Misbah, it is Misbah who has taken Pakistan team at such a height and what Ajmal is today. PCB should be condemned as much as possible for its unethical and motivated decisions which may harm not only present national team but whole of cricket structure in the country.
Mr. Hafeez must be removed immediately without delay so that our cricket team does not see the humiliation in world cup that our Olympians have experienced in London.

I don't think Hafeez deserves a spot in Test team let alone captaining it. PCB, why are you promoting politics in the dressing room? If you are not happy with some one you should have genuine reason. Once you have a genuine reason then it is safe to remove the guy from captaining the side. I guess, it is yet another case of personal likings and dis likings. No wonder because PCB's head is there because of someone's likings.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pakistan lost last ODI vs Australia cuzz of divisions and we could clearly see how players were playing reckless shots and throwing their wickets away after good starts. Hafeez shouldn't be the captain, Afridi deserves T20 and ODI captaincy while Misbah should be retained as test captain. Misbah brought stability, restored Pakistan's pride and earned respect internationally. He plans but players fail to deliver and than they blame him. They keep criticising his age while some players are still playing after 40 and performing well. I don't see why they should drop him when he's performing. It's going to a chaos when he leaves. Just wait and see, Hafeez will be kicked after few failures and PCB will start looking for new capatin.

To be very honest, I am not a Misbah fan but, disrespecting him as a captain by encouraging his juniors to by pass him is not just ridiculous but pathetic on part of the PCB, especially for Zaka Ashraf. Misbah may be a tuk-tuk player as everyone calls him but, he is a pretty decent person and a calm captain. Whereas this so-called Professor is pseudo, phony and hyper. Hafeez's international career is not so different from Misbah's in terms of appearances. After their debut, both struggled for almost 7~8 years to maintain a regular place in the International XI because of mediocrity, lack of focus and unable to impress the selectors.
Hafeez was known to be a 30~40 player he scored his first maiden hundred very recently and the main reason being the encouragement he got from Afridi (as captain) and Misbah both, that he was used as an opening bowler in ODI's and T20. From the year 2010 he played well as an all-rounder. But, the moment he has been made Captain of the T20 team his performance has taken a dip, the last T20 against Australia was an example of inexperience on part of Hafeez, he changed SIX bowlers in 7 overs! Bravo Professor for your creativity. And, good luck to the team in Sri Lanka

I personally support Misbah Due to his calm and defensive attitude... I don't see any other person playing calmly under hyper pressures as well, as he has been playing and leading the Team...
Anyways.... Misbah good luck and better you retire before PCB should give you notice, as it has been in practice in Pakistan.

PCB has gone nuts. Misbah is the one who made Hafeez from nothing to something. Cornering Misbah is probably the worst thing to at this point. PCB is responsible of promoting politics in the dressing room and then complaining about it. Promoting Hafeez as Test captain is ridiculous. He is not even an automatic selection in the test team. His best weapon, offspin bowling, is practically of no use in tests. Azhar Ali seems to be the best choice for Test captain after Misbah.

If we want to be a loving and understanding cricketing nation than we have to prove it. Just like with the past captains, we can not 'use and abuse' Misbah. He is an honest man and a professional athlete. His success rate is 75 % which is far better than most of the captains in the past.
Every captain comes with their own approach and technique. Misbah took over this responsibility and proved a good solid captain. His approach is defensive but in a way, it has worked for our team. 90 % of the time, we needed a middle order person to stabilize the collapse due to our top order. He has done this job multiple of times and now he is being criticized of being slow??
In my opinion, we need him to stay as playing 11 in test and ODI sides under Hafeez's captaincy. Hafeez is good but still could take advantage of Misbah's experience.

Regardless how good record of Misbah as a Captain.
Look at his age and fitness. Do you want him to pass his 50 with the team. All Pakistan players hide their ages (per Imran Khan). On record he is 39, what do you think about his age?
His batting is getting worst day by day (reminds Zhareer Abbas last days) , he can not play at number 3. Scared from fast bowling as like Inzi Baba. Please remember because of him we lost two world cups. His good records was always against weak teams, like Inzi baba. All matches in Dubai and Sharja are mostly fixed. Please do not count on those results. Mohammad Yusuf is younger than him and one of the best batsman Pakistan had in last two decades. We hould bring back him and appoint captain for Test and One day for four years.

complete and utter nonsense from the PCB, Misbah deserves the right to choose his selected players for the ODI's. Hafeez has not proven himself, as a matter of Misbah is the one with a sensible head on his shoulders which is apparent from his approach in the field and how he tackles with pressure situations with his players.
PCB don't rush to get Hafeez captain in all formats, its going to be the mother of all follies. Retain Misbah and give him confidence to build a better team for the next two years.

Misbah's batting average of 37.52 with SR of 110.20 is far better than Hafeez's 20.21 with SR of 112.52. We have just seen a trailer of bad captaincy of Hafeez in 3rd T20 VS Australia. I can't understand whats going on here!

I was expecting this when they PCB changed Mohshin khan as coach of Pakistani test team.He developed a decepline in the team. Gave a message to players that those who performe in middle will get a chance.He acted on this warning.He got read of Umer Akmal from test side and later on from ODI.He gave a chance to Asad Shafique and Azhar Ali along with Toufique Omer.Results of these changes are in front of us.But some vested intrest in managment brought back paper tiger cricketers.They are big names but doing nothing in the middle.It seems to me that group of people in administration do not want to see Pakistan to be a number one in cricket.Grouping in team is visible because of that they did not give Misbah an honour to beat Australia in series after 10 years in his captainship.

I previously had no doubts before...now this news confirms me the fact that this guy Mr. Hafeez "so called professor" has big time outside influence to be in the team ; then he became the captain in T20 format and now they are considering him to captain in all formats of the game ! fantastic. Go back in history and try to prove me wrong if this guy has ever played a memorable inning that anyone can remember or at least preformed much better than anyone else than other members in the team. I simply don't like the fact that players extremely talented than him are sitting outside with no future than playing domestic cricket. Its all biased selection.

He is averaging 43 in ODIS 45 in test cricket and have balls to lead hi team. n he has been showing this in recent and far past.

the stability pakistan team has got owes to Misba. Show some respect to him although he is defensive at times. The position pakistan team is in ,its credit goes to misba .

Misbah's time is over. we have to admit it. we should prepare for 2015 World cup from now on. So one can understand that by 2015 Misbah will surely not in the team because of age factor. and calling him the most successful captain is another mistake by writer indeed.
