KARACHI, Sept 19: A man drowned while another was saved by lifeguards at Kanupp Point near the Hawkesbay beach on Wednesday.
The drowned man was identified as 34-year-old Shahid Ali and the one pulled out of the sea by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation lifeguards as Ali Ibrahim, 26.
The young men were picnicking at the rocky beach at Kanupp Point with another half a dozen friends when a few of them decided to go for a swim.
Their friends’ call for help alerted the KMC lifeguards keeping watch close by. Three of them made several attempts to reach the man closest to them struggling to stay afloat, Ali Ibrahim.
“While they were trying to reach him, the other, Shahid Ali, who was farther away, vanished from sight. Although we finally pulled out Ali Ibrahim, we couldn’t save Shahid Ali and the search for him is on although we will have to take a break now due to nightfall,” KMC Emergency Response Centre’s Station Officer Mohammad Mairaj Khan told Dawn.
“We will have to resume the search for the downed man at dawn on Thursday.”
Mr Khan said Ali Ibrahim was doing fine after having received first aid at their centre. “He had swallowed a lot of water, but is much better now,” he said.
