LAHORE, Sept 24: The Punjab government has decided to form a probe committee for investigating the violent protests on the Love for Prophet (peace be upon him) Day.

A decision to the effect was taken in a meeting jointly chaired by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Model Town here on Monday.

The meeting was attended by the provincial chief secretary, the inspector general of police and other senior leaders.

Nawaz League Deputy Secretary-General Ahsan Iqbal told the media, after the meeting, that the allegations levelled by the federal government about involvement of the Punjab government and the police in violent protests were wrong and fabricated as the PPP-led ruling alliance was trying to cover up its own failures in maintaining the law and order on the occasion.

Mr Iqbal, however, admitted that the violence on Friday during protests against the anti-Islam film made the country a laughing stock in the eyes of the world.

The PML-N leader said  the Punjab government was formulating a strategy to investigate the factors and the elements behind it.
