TANK, Sept 26: A grand tribal jirga on Wednesday rejected the idea of merging Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa outright and demanded changes to a few arbitrary sections of Frontier Crimes Regulation for better security situation in the tribal region.

The meeting took place at the offices of South Waziristan Agency’s political administration here.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Mehsud, South Waziristan Circle organised the jirga, which was attended by representatives of all tribal agencies.

Addressing the jirga, participants said last year, a resolution had been presented in the provincial assembly for merge of Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

They said they rejected the said resolution outright and urged the government not to pursue the matter under the current critical circumstances.

The participants said military offensive had displaced thousands of tribesmen, who were either living in camps or rented houses in different parts of the country, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

They praised JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for organising a grand jirga in Peshawar that formed a representative jirga of tribal elders to discuss the said resolution. —Correspondent
