LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday stated that the post of president of the country is respectable but not immune to contempt of court proceedings, DawnNews reported.

The larger bench headed by Chief Justice LHC Umar Atta Bandial was hearing a case regarding dual posts of President Asif Ali Zardari.

The bench adjourned the hearing to October 10 by ordering both parties to present their arguments.

Speaking to media representatives after the hearing, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Aitzaz Ahsan ciriticised the Supreme Court for disqualifying Yousuf Raza Gilani from the post of prime minister by calling the verdict “illegitimate.”

Ahsan said the apex court can force the government to write the letter to Swiss authorities if they want to disrespect the president in front of a foreign magistrate.

The counsel for the former premier said that things would have turned out differently if the apex court had accepted his recommendations of finding a ‘middle way.’

Ahsan said that the Supreme Court has entered into a “dead-end street” by disqualifying former PM Gilani.
