KARACHI, Sept 29: A jailer and his assistant were gunned down in Gulshan-i-Iqbal area of the city on Saturday, officials said.

They said armed men on a motorbike intercepted the car of jail superintendent Abdul Razzaq Abbasi and assistant superintendent Pir Masood near NIPA roundabout when they were going home.

Quoting eyewitnesses, East SSP Javed Mehar said two assailants on a motorbike attacked the policemen.

“One of them fired multiple shots before speeding away. The two officers died while being treated at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre,” he said.

He said both the officers were posted at the Landhi jail for the last several years but it was not yet clear whether the killings were linked to their professional duties or not.

“The investigators have collected multiple casings of 9mm bullets. It is too early to say anything about the motive of the attack,” he added.
