KARACHI, Oct 6: The second day of the two-day Expo Pakistan fashion presentation, held under the aegis of the Trade Development Authority Pakistan (TDAP), began with a showing of a collection by prominent designer Faiza Samee.

A big name in the Pakistani fashion industry, Faiza Samee is known for her sheer attention to detail and her delicate, intricate embroidery. This collection, however, displayed a very different side to the designer as the embroidery was minimal.

Her collection was in pure silk and chiffon among other fabrics and had loose flowing pants over straight tunics or those with shorter hemlines and elegant kaftans. Overall, it was a very beautiful and sensuous collection.

Kuki Concepts is a design label known for its quirkiness. The inspiration for the incredibly colourful collection that the label showed at the TDAP fashion presentation was inspired by Sindhi rallis (and it seemed carpets as well), coin work and thread embroidery. A predominantly menswear collection with a few outfits for women, Kuki Concepts showed jackets, capes, pants and shirts in an array of colours.

Nida Khurram is a relatively new designer and showed a collection composed of elegant, sophisticated, evening wear garments that displayed her minimalistic aesthetic. The wraps and dresses she showed were one of a kind and her colour palette consisted of turquoise, black, cream and brown among others.

Although the introduction to Monica Couture’s collection stated that the Ottoman and Mughal eras inspired her, she began her collection by showing black evening cocktail dresses that resembled anything but what was worn during those eras. The broadcast introduction also mentioned that she was intent on reviving the lost craft of using silver and gold thread in embroidery while also using semi-precious stones.

Select students of Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design also showed their thesis collections on the runway.

Student collections always come across as being experimental and from outfits that displayed their own spin on military chic to those inspired by the fashions of the Native Americans to that inspired by the white snowy owl, they displayed their creativity well on the ramp.

Ethnic prints, bright, bold colours is what comes to mind when describing the collection by design label Rung Ja.

In an array of short and long tunics, straight and pleated shalwars among others, Rung Ja’s ready-to-wear collection lit up the ramp by its colourful embroidery and ethnic designs.

Dance duo Brekhna and Zarmeena performed a Bollywood-inspired number with their troupe of dancers while wearing clothes from the collection.

The evening came to a close with a collection of garments made of Pareesa Lawn by Chen One.

The collection was styled by designer Sahar Atif. The colour palette of Pareesa Lawn was pink against a cool white, a mix of black and white prints among others.

The choreography of the entire fashion presentation was by designer Rizwan Beyg, organised by Tehmina Khaled, and the hair and make-up of the female models was by Angie Marshall. The male models were styled by Sajid.

The event finished with celebratory streamers being blasted onto the ramp with the models standing in line wearing the last collection.
