Running on empty

Shortly after his prediction that winter would pass smoothly where gas shortages were concerned, the Prime Minister's Adviser on  Petroleum and Natural Resources, Dr Asim Hussain, foresees a long, cold winter without gas for geysers, heaters and burners. Last year, gas loadshedding during winter had disastrous effects on Punjab's industries and this year, already gas supplies have been cut for months. It's partly due to depleting gas reserves, poor generation and mass consumption. However, no one is prepared to admit that the major cause for the current crisis has been a flawed and short-sighted gas policy. While the last decade witnessed hundreds of thousands of vehicles converting to CNG, today, the future for CNG users hangs in the balance. It is no wonder stakeholders are asking: where has all the gas gone?
