The two SMs, Sindh Muslim (SM) Government Science College and Sindh Madressahtul Islam University, are at loggerheads over three buildings. It is now being said that SM Science College should move to another building as they are currently occupying three of Sindh Madressahtul Islam University’s old hostel buildings — Khairpur House, Sardar House and Hasan Ali House — as a makeshift arrangement.

But after the Sindh Madressatul Islam was awarded university status on Feb 16, 2012, the bill passed by the Sindh assembly at the time goes against this arrangement. SM Science College is affiliated with the University of Karachi and it can only function in the Sindh Madressahtul Islam University building now if it becomes a constituent college of Sindh Madressahtul Islam University. Otherwise it has been advised to relocate in the SM Arts or SM Commerce College buildings.

On the SM Science College’s part, it is said that if Sindh Maderessah was where Jinnah got his schooling from, the Father of the Nation also established SM College. So the college should also be given equal respect. The SM Science College has some eight to nine faculties and the other accommodation being offered to it doesn’t have room for all the different labs and classrooms. Therefore it should be allowed to carry on in the Sindh Madressah buildings until it is provided a proper building of its own. —S.H.
