Asghar Khan case: CEC says ECP cannot proceed against accused politicians
ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim on Monday said that in spite of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Asghar Khan petition, the election commission could not initiate proceedings against the concerned politicians, DawnNews reported.
Speaking to media representatives in Islamabad, Ebrahim lauded the apex court’s ruling but said the ECP’s rules did not allow it to proceed against politicians accused of taking bribes.
Ebrahim moreover said that no reference had been forwarded by the Senate’s chairman to the ECP on the issue of Rehman Malik’s possible disqualification.
He added that the commission had also not made a decision pertaining to proceedings against the minister.
Referring to his meeting with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Ebrahim said the chief justice had assured him of appointing judicial officers during the general elections.
