LONDON, Oct 21: Sunderland and Newcastle United fought out a thrilling 1-1 draw in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday with Newcastle scoring at the right end after three minutes and at the wrong end five minutes from time as the points were shared.
Yohan Cabaye scored after three minutes to give the visitors the lead at the Stadium of Light before Newcastle were reduced to 10 men after 25 minutes when Cheick Tiote was sent off for a rash kick at Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher.
Sunderland grabbed a point when John O’Shea met Sebastian Larsson’s free-kick with a powerful header that deflected into the net off the face of United striker Demba Ba.
Ba’s own goal ensured the fourth 1-1 draw in the last six meetings between these two old enemies, but Sunderland, who have beaten Newcastle just once in their last 16 clashes, are still waiting for their first win over the Magpies since 2008.
The result left both teams in mid-table with Newcastle in 11th place on 10 points from eight games and Sunderland 14th on eight with a match in hand.
In the late game, Queens Park Rangers remained rooted to the bottom of the standings after being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton, despite playing against 10 men for the final half-hour at Loftus Road.
Junior Hoilett’s deflected goal for the hosts in the second minute was cancelled out in the 33rd when Sylvain Distin’s header bounced off the post, hit QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar and rebounded into the net — going down as an own goal against the Brazilian.
Steven Pienaar was dismissed in the 61st after picking up a second booking for clipping the heels of Jose Bosingwa but QPR couldn’t capitalise. Indeed, the visitors, who stay fourth in the standings, came closest to grabbing a winner when Phil Jagielka headed against the crossbar in the first-half.
In Saturday’s late game, a lacklustre Arsenal missed a chance to move into fourth place when they crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat at Norwich City — their first defeat at the Canaries since 1984.
Chris Hughton’s team claimed their first league win of the season to leave the visitors 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea, who have 22.
Grant Holt got the only goal in the 20th minute when the burly striker converted the rebound after Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone spilled Alexander Tettey’s drive.
