ECP decides against Malik’s disqualification

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Election Commission on Tuesday decided not to disqualify Interior Minister Rehman Malik as a legislator, DawnNews reported.
Speaking to Dawn.com, Secretary Election Commisison Afzal Khan said that no further proceedings will be conducted against Malik. Khan said the decision was taken during a meeting of the ECP, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, following a reference sent by Deputy Chairman Senate Sabir Baloch regarding Malik’s disqualification.
The reference states that there was no question of Malik’s disqualification.
Last month, the Supreme Court had disqualified 11 members of parliament and provincial assemblies, for holding dual nationalities — forbidden for lawmakers by Pakistani law — but had spared Mr Malik, leaving the ball in the the Senate chairman’s court to file a reference against him to the Election Commission within 30 days deciding on his disqualification.
The only sentence the minister received was a court observation that he could not be considered sagacious, righteous, honest and ameen.
Earlier today, Malik also filed a review petition against the SC’s sentence. Malik said that the case was taken up against him on the request of an absconder and proclaimed offender Syed Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi. Malik also said that neither was he issued a notice, nor was he given the chance to be heard in court.
There is no scope of dual citizenship in the constitution.This is clear violation of the constitution.He should bring under law.No body is above the law .
his disqualification wont harm him, he will keep some ‘diplomacy’for next government( if ppp gets some share again). overall his political affirmation, of ZARADARI will sanctioned.
The EC should have disqualified him – he lied on the nationality issue!!!
The court can order his arrest without bail for influencing the EC.

The law should be applied equally to all citizens without any exception. The Supreme Court of Pakistan is acting like a kangaroo court. Malik should be disqualified right away.
Most of us very are fond of asking resignation from others,without realizing that,as citizen ,we have miserably failed and yet we are here to cry for resignations..
Are you serious? The one man who should have been disqualified for sheer misgovernance along time ago and for not able to provide security to the citizens of Paksitan
if he had any self respect he would have gone, but these type pf people have no self respect they only see their opportunity to make money out of their position.
The ECP has taken a good decision in the circumstances so that another Pandora’s box is not open close to election that will raise questions about the election process. In the ideal world, only extremely honest people should be elected; however, in a Pakistan of today, that is the best we ve got.
In the West, the moment an office bearer faces allegation– he/she steps down to let the legal proceedinds run smoothly, but in Pakistan – all the top Brass ignore the essential requirement, rather start benefiting from “the hypocritic politics of immunity” and stay clinged to power—– mutilating the essence of law leading to blindlessness of law.

any one with even a semblance of self respect would have resigned a long time back. but malik is malik and he is behaving as expected of him.
This is an indication the up coming election will be stolen by the PPP.
Nothing has changed. Election laws will favor them.
In the interest of promoting democracy in Pakistan the honourable Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, must order clemency in some special cases and let these candidates belonging to various political parties fight the forthcoming elections.
The people of Pakistan must use their better judgement and and common sense and not vote for those who have not truly served them during their long mandate.
What a petty.. he should be sent to prison for the rest of his life…
