LAHORE, Oct 24: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday summoned the complete record of Gulberg’s Doongi Ground case while hearing a petition seeking contempt proceedings against the chief minister and others for not implementing a court judgment issued on Sept 16, 2011.
Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh held first hearing of the contempt of court petition filed by Ahmad Imran Ghazi and adjourned further proceedings till Nov 8.
The petitioner submitted that a full bench of the high court had on Sept 16, 2011, directed the Punjab government to remove incomplete structure at the Doongi Ground. He said the judgment was never assailed before the Supreme Court and it still holds the field.
He said the non-restoring of a public park was a violation of the orders and contempt of court within the definition of Article 204 of the Constitution.
The petitioner pointed out that the previous government, led by Pervaiz Elahi, had in 2006 initiated a multi-billion project named “IMAX Theatre” and Shopping Mall at the Doongi Ground. He said the project was challenged before the superior courts and was declared illegal.
He said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had also announced that he would restore the Doongi Ground in its original position, but failed to keep his words.
The petitioner prayed that contempt proceedings against the chief minister, district coordination officer, commissioner and the LDA director general be initiated for not obeying the judgment. — Staff Reporter
