LAHORE, Oct 29: Three-year-old bay colt Balaj stormed up the last straight to win the Eid Cup, a prestigious race run over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres, stunning competitors at the Racecourse here on Monday.

Carrying a heavy impost of nine stones six pounds on his back, the thoroughbred colt, Balaj ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, reeled in Golden Rose, who hit the front followed by Winning Habits soon after entering the home stretch and swiftly moved ahead of the eleven runners’ field to take the first prize by five lengths.

Golden Rose finished second with Desert Flame and Winning Habits completing the frame.

Balaj clocked a fast timing of one minute 12 1/5 seconds over the distance on the grassy track in this sixth race of the day.

A race later, bay filly Domination put up a smashing performance worth her name when winning the Pennie Pie Cup, run over the distance of 1,300 metres.

With jockey M. Zulfiqar in the saddle, three-year-old filly Domination showed complete dominance over a field of ten runners in class four including a few top stars over the distance.

She defeated English thoroughbred mare Starry Night by three lengths with Elegance and Agasi third and fourth, respectively.

Agasi was ridden by jockey Javaid Iqbal, who seems to have lost touch with the saddle.

Meanwhile, Tariq Aziz was re-elected Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman for the eleventh consecutive time.

His election was unanimous at the Annual General Meeting of the members of the club held on Monday before races began.

Tariq Aziz levelled the record for the longest term in office which was previously held by late Khan Qurban Ali Khan.

The other stewards elected are: Malik Hamid Ali Noon, Sheikh Sajjad Hassan, Masud Pervez, Syed Pervez Hussain, Chaudhry Ahmed Saeed, Mohsin Jamil Baig, Arbab Mohammad Zahoor, Azmat Ali Ranjha and Syed Ahmed Mahmood.

The AGM was unique in a way when a few members who otherwise are never present at the races throughout the year attended the meeting.
