MINGORA, Nov 1: Unidentified persons killed a girl and injured a member of a local peace committee in Malam Jabba area of Swat on Thursday evening.

Sources said that assailants entered the house of Fazl Ghani, a member of local peace committee, and opened firing on him in Sair Thelegram locality on the outskirts of Malam Jabba.

Fazl Ghani received critical bullet injuries in the attack. However, a niece of Mr Ghani’s wife was killed on the spot, sources said. They said that the girl identified as Samreen had come from Karachi to spend few days with her relatives in Swat.

Mr Ghani was shifted to Saidu Teaching Hospital in precarious condition. Sources said that Mr Ghani was an active member of the local peace committee and he might be targeted by Taliban.

The increasing attacks on members of peace committees and opponents of Taliban have caused unrest among the people of Swat. The residents of the valley are still in shock after militants’ attack on Malala Yousufzai and her two classmates — Shazia and Kainat.

On October 25, unidentified assailants had shot dead 70-year-old Tajeem Khan and Sardar Ali, both members of an anti-militants peace committee, in Charbagh area of Swat valley.

According to police, armed persons opened firing on Tajeem Khan when he was offering Isha prayer at the local mosque. The assailants also killed Sardar Mohammad at his home.

His three-year-old son Noor Mohammad sustained injuries in the attack. However, in both the incidents the attackers managed to escape.
