Judicial commission to consider ECP’s request to supervise polls: CJ

LAHORE: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said the judicial commission would consider a request from the Election Commission of Pakistan asking the judiciary to supervise the upcoming general elections, DawnNews reported.
Speaking at a session of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) being held in Lahore, the chief justice thanked the political parties for expressing their confidence in the judiciary.
Addressing the session, Chief Justice Iftikhar informed the committee that the election commission had on recommendation from political parties submitted a request to hold the general elections under the judiciary’s supervision.
The ECP had hoped that judicial officers be appointed as returning officers during the elections.
In response, the chief justice thanked the political parties for their confidence in the judiciary.
He said the Judicial Commission of Pakistan would consider the request.
Furthermore, the chief justice reiterated that the judiciary respected all political parties, adding that, the ECP organising the general election was a victory of the Constitution.
The session was attended by all high court chief justices, registrars and prosecutors with the exception of the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court.
