KARACHI, Nov 7: Unseeded Mohammad Manzar created a stir when he shocked top seed Mohammad Abdul Saeed in the final to win the 35 plus singles title in the 17th Pakistan international seniors’ tennis championship at the Karachi Gymkhana here on Wednesday.

Playing on his home court, Manzar, who is serving as coach at the Karachi Gymkhana, swept aside his opponent 6-1, 6-3 in convincing fashion to capture his maiden international seniors’ title.

He had overcome Aly Panju in an exciting three-set semi-final 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 the other day while Saeed, who is also coach at a local club, got the better of Irfanullah Awan 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final match.

Meanwhile, top two seeds — Pawan Jain of India and Rashid Malik — will be up against each other in the 45 plus singles final on Thursday after winning their semi-finals in contrasting styles.

Top seed Jain cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Syed Mohammad Jalal while second seed Malik won against Imran Siddiqui after the latter retired losing the first set 2-6.

Results: 35 plus singles: Final: Mohammad Manzar bt Mohammad Abdul Saeed 6-1, 6-3.

45 plus singles: Semi-finals: Pawan Jain bt Syed Mohammad Jalal 6-1, 6-4; Rashid Malik bt Imran Siddiqui 6-2 — Imran retired.

Thursday’s fixtures: 45 plus singles final and 55 plus singles final at 5:00pm.—Sports Correspondent
