EC team gets hoardings removed: 11 held in PP-92 for brandishing arms

GUJRANWALA, Nov 9: Eleven activists of rival political parties were arrested by police from different parts of PP-92 on Friday for violating election code of conduct by displaying arms.

Five of the arrested belonged to the Pakistan People’s Party and six to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. They were detained from interior parts of the city in an operation carried out by a joint team of Baghbanpura, Sabzi Mandi and Khiali Shahpur police stations headed by City SP Haroon Joia.

They were identified as Khurram Shahzad, Sanaullah, Dilawar Khan, Faisal, Nadeem, Maqsood, Hanif, Abdul Qadir, Mudassar,
Shafiq and Tanvir.

The by-poll in PP-92 is due on Dec 4.

Meanwhile, a two-member monitoring team of the Election Commission on Friday visited different areas of PP-92 and got removed all hoardings/banners etc of candidates and whitewashed wall-chalking. The team also got tenders of development projects cancelled.

Talking to reporters, a two-member monitoring team comprising the district election officer of Bahawalpur Ghulam Farid and Nankana district election officer Muhammad Arshad Ghazali said independent candidate (of the same constituency) Muhammad Ishaq had complained to the election commission about the violation of code of conduct by some nominees of political parties.

They said all billboards and hoardings had been removed while tenders of construction work had been cancelled. They said Regional Election Commissioner Masoor Ahmad was also monitoring the situation in the constituency.
