As an earthquake of 7.6 Richter scale hit Guatemala last Wednesday on the 7th of November the world watched the deaths of at least 56 people and as thousands were left displaced. The most severely hit region was in San Marcos. Yet just over a week later they have the courage to celebrate the 80 year old tradition of flying giant vibrant kites to integrate Mayan and Catholic religious traditions. This year it is to ceremonialize the beginning of the a new Maya era starting on the 21st of December, 2012.
