PARIS: France on Thursday condemned the hanging of a Pakistani soldier convicted of murder and called for the country to renew its moratorium on executions and work towards abolishing the death penalty.

“This decision constitutes a step backwards in Pakistan’s move towards greater respect for human rights,” French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot told reporters.

Mohammad Hussain, condemned to death by a court martial in 2008 for killing a superior over a personal dispute, was hanged Thursday at Mianwali jail in the country’s first execution in four years, officials said.

Pakistan has had an unofficial moratorium on executions in recent years, with President Asif Ali Zardari regularly issuing stay orders for condemned prisoners.

Farooq Nazeer, chief of prisons in the central province of Punjab, said the hanging was not a civilian execution and the government did not intervene in military cases.

He said the last execution in Pakistan was in November 2008, soon after the end of military rule.

COMMENTS

  1. all of u not understand the France comment

    by lakshmanan india

  2. no actually France should tell this to USA first

  3. I wonder why Asif Zardari is so keen on issuing stay orders for criminals to be punished.

  4. France the most anti muslim nation should try and treat their 6 million muslims as equal first before giving lectures to others. Also they should take up the capital punisment case with US first, I doubt they would. They are known as cowards in europe after how they capitulated in world war 2.

  5. France should first abandon the restriction on Scarf for muslim women instead of interfering in Pak. internal matters.

  6. Why should France interfere in the internal affairs of Pakistan. There is no doubt that tooth for tooth eye for eye is the best way of dealing with those who have committed the crime. But justice should not be selective – one for the military, another for the civilians – precisely the reason why justice is called blind.

  7. Did france ever condemned any execution in USA? What a hypocrite and typical European double standards!

  8. Human rights also calls for respect for other religions. human rights also calls for freedom to wear anything(Hijab). human rights also calls for tolrence for other faiths and their way of life. I don’t find that in FRANCE. All i can find is FRANCE love for nudity, homosexuality, anti-Islam policies, support for murderers who them selves do not respect other human lives.

i hope this trend of executions inccreases to include talibans, murderers and kidnappers

  9. They should mind their own business instead of interfering others.

  10. Yes, Pakistan should have asked France for paying for the imprisonment costs of a murderer because Pakistan does not collect enough taxes (from its elites and businesses) to pay for such life long expenses of public funds, as if Pakistan has any available for those peacefully living in poverty.

  11. Taliban are forgiven and released why not this soldier given life imprisonment rather than hanging.

  12. What is their problem? Now they don’t want us to punish criminals because it’s ‘against human rights’? Why the ‘war against terrorism’ then?

  13. Every country should mind their own business. don’t interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs. where was france when people are and were being hanged and given lethal injections all over the world.

  14. France is right, it is time to end such acts.

  15. France needs to mind its own business – capital punishement is still practised (rightly or wrongly) by many countries including some States in the USA, and its a country’s internal judicial matter. Nothing of international significance.

  16. Pakistan government should have intervened to save the life. There should be moratorium on death penalty. Life is given by God and He only has right to take it back.

  17. How this is a story heading for a Pakistani news paper? Would newspapers in France put similar headings if Pakistan condemns anything that happens in France. They will just ignore Pakistan.

Pakistani news papers should think what they print. Their audience are mostly Pakistanis not Europeans.

  18. No France should tell its ally USA first! Its ok in Uncle Sams land but forbidden elsewhere!

  19. France should tell the same to Israel to stop killing defenseless people.

  20. this is unique country hanged its p.m. who gave, interalia, 1973 consitution – who knows who is next…………..

  21. France has a habit of unnecessarily interfering in other countries affairs. They want to go back to the colonial days and act as the moral police.

  22. France should tell this to the Tallibans first.
