Jawed, thanks to you, I discovered a lot of old music of ours; It was all the more fascinating now to read of Gregorian chants in your column today hence. I discovered such music only when I moved out of the country as I only attended a public (not private) school in India. Indeed, much more soulful than the "popular" Christmas music, the Gregorian chants stand out as the harbingers of the festive season but I have a particular fondness for one I discovered at my daughter's school a few years ago..."Green Grow'th The Holly" available on you tube - perhaps you are already aware of it. Also, you may want to check "Adeste fideles - Venite Adoremus" by Pavarotti.

Mr. Naqvi, for a change, For the first time, I see a secular style writting from you and I am happy you are not being biased but tried your level best to balance between all the religious flavors of music.
I know I had labelled you to be a 'Leased Muslim' for Pakistan against the 'Rented Muslim' comment that I read about Pakistanies calling Salman Kurshid for his 'Benzir Butto - hot air baloon' comments.
Balanced views in articals like this makes it scratch off the 'Leased Muslim' label and change our opinions on your views and writtings.
Talking about Music, I don't see you mention anything about the South Indian flavor of Carnatic music. Being a music lover, I wish to request you to listen to some classics of Purandara Daasa, Tyagaraja and the sufis like Shishunaala Sharief whose songs praise both Hindu and Muslim gods as one, specially in the voices of Dr. M S Subbbalakshmi, Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, Dr. Mallikarjuna Mansor etc. Hope you enjoy that music and continue to write some similar balanced thoughts. We love you calling a spade a spade but not calling an iron spade as a gold spade.

As usual a very perceptive article. All religions are awash with violence and hatred of others but we are lucky to some extent that music and good feelings of festivals like Diwali for a few days make them a little tolerable. Thanks for helping people like me who are not well versed with old music.
