Taxis without meters

Published November 18, 2012

THIS is apropos of Zubair Yasufzai’s letter(Nov 11). I was in Mumbai in September and I noticed that every taxi and rickshaw in Mumbai has a functional fair meter.

In older taxis the meters are of the normal type which are fixed outside, the rickshaws too have similar meters.

In the newer taxis, the meters are digital and fixed inside taxis. The manual meters are non-adjustable and the variance in rates announced by the state from time to time is given in a table held with the driver.

The rates after midnight are increased according to the table. There is no concept of tipping of taxi and rickshaw drivers. If the fare comes to Rs48, the taxi driver returns two rupees when Rs50 note is given to him.

The DIG Traffic and administrator/ commissioner are requested to please note and take necessary action in this regard.
