Ghalib centenary

Published November 19, 2012

This is apropos of Intizar Husain’s article, “The cities Ghalib visited” (Books and Authors, Nov 11). The article says: “Ghalib Institute was formed in 1969 on the occasion of Ghalib’s death centenary, which was ‘celebrated’ at the initiative of Dr Zakir Husain with active participation of the then president of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and premier Indira Gandhi.”

Dr Zakir Husain himself, and not Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, was the president of India when the Ghalib Institute was established in February 1969.

Elected on May 13, 1967, Dr Zakir Husain was the first Muslim to be elected president of India. He became the first Indian president to die in office on May 3, 1969. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the second Muslim president of India, was elected on August 20, 1974.
