QUETTA, Nov 20: Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) has demanded of the government to arrest the killers of Rehmatullah Abid, a journalist who was gunned down in Panjgur on Saturday.

Journalists took out a procession from the press club on the call of the BUJ here on Tuesday. Participants of the procession, who wanted to march up to the governor house, were stopped by the police near the T&T Chowk.

Addressing the rally, BUJ General Secretary Hameedullah, President of the Quetta Press Club Saleem Shahid and Vice-President Yaqoob Shahwani as well as Irfan Saeed criticised the government for its failure to apprehend killers of their colleagues over the last few years.

They said that Abdul Haq Baloch, a local journalist and general secretary of Khuzdar Press Club, was assassinated last month. Similarly, two sons of president of Khuzdar press club were murdered but police miserably failed to arrest the accused.

Representatives of the BUJ and QPC regretted targeted killing of journalists in Balochistan and sought their protection.

They asserted that journalists were facing serious threats both from the agencies and militant groups who desired publication of news as per their wishes.

Journalists, they added, would never compromise on their principles.
