ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) petition to become a party in the voter list irregularities case, DawnNews reported.

A three-member unit led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the case.

MQM’s counsel, Farogh Nasim told the court that the MQM has always opposed all unconstitutional measures and wholly supported the strengthening of the democratic system.

He added that the transferring of three million votes from Karachi polling stations was baseless and that MQM had verified this from their election cell. He also said people had made use of their right to vote in 2008 and also voted in the local governments.

In response to Advocate Nasim, Chief Justice Iftikhar asked that how a difference of about 66 million and 68 million came about.

Director General (Elections) Syed Sher Afgan told the court that about four million people could not be contacted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Subsequently, the apex court adjourned the hearing for voter list irregularities case to Nov 28.
