The top revenue body of a country should think about the long run. Trying to achieve this year’s fiscal target by tax amnesty is not only myopic, but also unsustainable and detrimental over the long run. They should instead focus on improving the tax collection machinery and plug loopholes for evasion.

For a moment if we agree that current tax amnesty proposed by FBR will help achieve tax Collection target for this year , but what’s going to happen next year , are they going to sell the President House, Parliament House , Supreme Court Building , Jinnah’s Mausoleum etc to cover the deficit.

If the amnesty scheme can guarantee an increase in the Tax net then it’s a good scheme. If it is not going to make people start paying taxes after amnesty then this scheme is like making a hole in the fish net and all the fishes will escape.
