Tackling Taliban

Published November 28, 2012

THIS refers to the letter ‘Defining Taliban’ (Nov 15) by S.K. Hussain who has discussed Thuggee and Dacoit Suppression Acts 1836-1848.

Our parliament should match the courage of little Malala and enact a law similar to the law made by the then East India Company’s Lord William Bentinck and executed by William Henry Sleeman.

The thugs were eliminated within a year by using the Acts. The Acts empowered the courts to sentence an accused of thuggery only on the evidence of a single witness even if the witness was a turncoat thug.
