KARACHI, Nov 29: The staging of National Twenty20 Cup in Karachi would have been a better option than shifting the event to Lahore, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said on Thursday.

“I don’t know why the event was shifted to Lahore from Karachi. I personally feel that the weather conditions and environment are the best in Karachi these days,” he told reporters here.

“I was planning to watch some of the matches in Karachi to see the boys in action but now the matches have been shifted.”

Wasim noted that since days were shorter in the winter season, fog may also hamper smooth conduct of matches in Lahore.

Meanwhile, Sindh Sports Minister Dr Mohammad Ali Shah also sounded disappointed with the shifting of the event to Lahore by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Dr Shah said he was ready to provide foolproof security in Karachi but the PCB never approached him. He added that after successfully hosting two T20 matches involving an International World XI and All Star Pakistan XI in Karachi, it was not difficult for Sindh government to host the T20 Cup.

“Holding the T20 matches in coloured clothing under floodlights would have suited to Karachi at this time,” he maintained.

“Players from South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka enjoyed playing here during the World XI tour, so there is no reason why our own players can’t play here,” he argued.

Dr Shah, a former KCCA president, further said that cricket-lovers of Karachi were disappointed with the shifting of the event to Lahore.—APP
