KARACHI, Dec 6: The Election Commission is busy devising policy under the fresh Supreme Court verdict that would be announced ‘very soon’ and convinced to implement the apex court orders for Karachi electoral rolls, the chief election commissioner told leaders of political parties here on Thursday.

While meeting leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Tehrik-i-Insaf, Jamaat-i-Islami, and Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan-F at Sindh Election Commission office, Justice Fakharuddin G. Ebrahim also assured the leaders of ‘transparent elections’ under his supervision, but sought their support as well for make the task a success.

“Supreme Court orders regarding Karachi electoral rolls in particular and other aspects of the upcoming elections in general remained the crux of the discussion of all parties’ leaders with the chief election commissioner,” said a source privy to the chief Election Commissioner’s hours-long engagements.

“The message from the Chief Election Commissioner was clear that his organisation is set to follow the Supreme Court orders related to electoral process whether it’s regarding electoral rolls or code of conduct. The meeting is due on (Friday) the same issue that would lead to final policy from the Election Commission on the subject.”

Leading his party delegation senior MQM leader and federal minister for overseas Pakistanis Dr. Farooq Sattar showed concern over the violation of code of conduct by the contesting parties in recent by-polls both in Punjab and Sindh. Talking to group of journalists after meeting Justice Ibrahim, Mr. Sattar reiterated his party’s stand on delimitation of Karachi.

“Question mark over electoral rolls is in every district of Pakistan. We differ on principal and believe on complaint of one particular area there should not be delimitation of entire city. If it’s the case, then there should delimitation countrywide,” he said.

The other party leaders also raised performance of the Sindh Election Commission during their meeting with Justice Ibrahim.

They mainly criticised the role of provincial body’s chief and sought his replacement before the general elections due after March 2013, said the source.

“The Chief Election Commissioner heard the complaint came from the PML-N, PTI and JI leaders. They were assured of seriousness over their reservations. They were also informed that the CEC is due to chair crucial meeting on Friday that would address several issues including their recent concerns,” he added.
