KARACHI, Dec 7: The Sindh health department confirmed on Friday two more deaths caused by the dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Both victims were 11-year-old boys and died at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) earlier this week.

According to a source in AKUH, one of the boys had been admitted to the hospital on Nov 22 and died on Dec 4.

The focal person of the dengue surveillance cell, Dr Shakil A. Mullick, said that deceased was a resident of the Patel Para area.

Speaking about the second victim, the AKUH source said that he was a resident of Bilal Colony in Korangi and had been brought to the hospital’s emergency on Dec 4. He died a day later on Dec 5.

With the addition of two latest fatalities, the total number of deaths caused by dengue this year has risen to four. All the deaths were reported from AKUH.

Meanwhile, according to the official dengue summary report issued on Friday, 10 new dengue cases were reported during the past 24 hours. Nine cases were reported from AKUH while one was reported from the Dr Ziauddin Hospital.

Around 51 cases have been reported during the current month as compared to 40 cases reported in December 2011.

A total of 672 dengue patients have been reported this year in Karachi, according to the dengue surveillance cell. Most number of cases, 412, were reported from the AKUH, followed by Civil Hospital Karachi, 163. Around 35 cases were reported from the Liaquat National Hospital, 24 from the Dr Ziauddin Hospital and 11 from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The rest of the cases were reported from other government and private hospitals in the city.
