HYDERABAD, Dec 10: Sindh Assembly deputy speaker Shehla Raza has said that the government has set up a separate ministry to safeguard human rights and urged all people, belonging to all walks of life, to put in their share in the elimination of the curse of harassment and torture on women.

She was addressing a seminar organised by the Sindh Development Society at Mumtaz Mirza Auditorium here on Monday to mark the Human Rights Day.

She said the governmental and non-governmental organisations had played a significant role in eradicating violence against women. Police officials must cooperate with victims of violence and provide them justice, she said.

Regarding the Kalabagh dam issue, she said the talk about it must halt now because three provincial assemblies had already rejected the project.

Decisions which could lead to confrontation among institutions must be avoided, she said, adding that elected members of assemblies had always rejected anti-Sindh projects. PPP was a champion of women’s rights and it had always ensured their rights were protected, she said.

She expressed satisfaction over performance of law enforcement agencies in the face of terror attacks.

They were performing well with the limited resources they had at their disposal, she said.

SDS director Abdul Ghaffar said that his organisation had launched a 16-day campaign in November against violence against women in police custody.

During this drive, SDS workers visited women jails in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Naushahro Feroze and the departments which provided shelter to women in distress.
