Ace sitar player and one of the legends of world music Pandit Ravi Shankar passed away in San Diego on Dec 11. The great sitar player and composer is credited for popularising a purely eastern instrument, sitar, around the rest of the world, so much so that famous western musicians often collaborated with him.

His performance alongside members of the iconic pop band The Beatles is remembered to date. Panditji’s two daughters, too, have made their mark in the music scene. While Anushka Shankar has followed in her father’s footsteps and plays the sitar very well, his second daughter Norah Jones is a renowned western singer.

Pandit Ravi Shankar churned out many albums and composed music for some of the most renowned directors’ films, including the great Satyajit Ray. — PYT
